Baladeva Vidyabhusana Astakam

 

||śrī-baladeva-vidyābhūṣaṇāṣṭakam||

 

गोविन्दैकान्ती कलिङ्गे कलिन्दः श्यामानन्दी यः परिव्राट्पुरोगः।

श्रीराधादामोदरानुव्रतो यो देवं विद्याभूषणं तं यजामः ॥१॥

govindaikāntī kaliṅge kalindaḥ

śyāmānandī yaḥ parivrāṭ-purogaḥ |

śrī-rādhādāmodarānuvrato yo

devaṁ vidyābhūṣaṇaṁ taṁ yajāmaḥ ||1||

govindaikāntī— exclusively devoted to Govinda; kaliṅge— in Odisha; kalindaḥ— the sun; śyāmānandī— belonging to the Śyāmānanda-parivāra; yaḥ— he who; parivrāṭ— of ascetics; purogaḥ— the foremost; śrī-rādhādāmodarānuvrataḥ— a faithful disciple of Rādhā-Dāmodara Gosvāmī; yaḥ— he who; devam— divine; vidyābhūṣaṇam— to Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa; tam— to him; yajāmaḥ— we worship.

                He who appeared in Odisha like the effulgent sun, is exclusively devoted to Govinda, belongs to the spiritual line of Śyāmānanda Prabhu, is the foremost ascetic, and is a faithful disciple of Rādhā-Dāmodara Gosvāmī— we worship such a divine Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa.

 

आम्नायव्याकोशराद्धान्तरूपं निःशेषं यत् प्रत्यनीकप्रहारम् ।

व्यक्तीभूतं येन गोविन्दभाष्यं देवं विद्याभूषणं तं यजामः ॥२॥

āmnāya-vyākośa-rāddhānta-rūpaṁ

niḥśeṣaṁ yat pratyanīka-prahāram |

vyaktībhūtaṁ yena govinda-bhāṣyaṁ

devaṁ vidyābhūṣaṇaṁ taṁ yajāmaḥ ||2||

āmnāya— of the Vedic scriptures; vyākośa— blossomed; rāddhānta— philosophical conclusion; rūpam— in the form of; niḥśeṣam— completely; yat— which; pratyanīka— opponents; prahāram— smashing; vyaktībhūtam— revealed; yena— by whom; govinda-bhāṣyam— the Brahma-sūtra commentary named Govinda-bhāṣya.

He who revealed the Govinda-bhāṣya, which is the blossomed philosophical conclusion of all Vedic scriptures and which completely smashes all opponents— we worship such a divine Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa.

 

सेवाकुञ्जौकःसु शश्वन्निवेशो राधाश्यामौ यस्य चोपास्यमूर्ती ।

श्रीयूनो रासेरसोल्लासभाजं देवं विद्याभूषणं तं यजामः ॥३॥

sevākuñjaukaḥsu śaśvan niveśo

rādhā-śyāmau yasya copāsya-mūrtī |

śrī-yūno rāserasollāsa-bhājaṁ

devaṁ vidyābhūṣaṇaṁ taṁ yajāmaḥ ||3||

sevākuñja— of the place named Sevākuñja; okaḥsu— among the inhabitants; śaśvat— eternally; niveśaḥ— dwelling place; rādhā-śyāmau— Rādhā-Śyāmasundara; yasya— whose; ca— and; upāsya— worshipable; mūrtī— deities; śrī-yūnoḥ— of the Divine Couple; rāserasa— transcendental amorous pastimes; ullāsa— splendour; bhājam— relishing.

                He who has an eternal residence among the inhabitants of Sevākuñja, whose worshipable deities are Rādhā-Śyāmasundara, and who relishes the splendour of Their transcendental amorous pastimes— we worship such a divine Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa.

 

रूपोपस्तिं जैवमर्मज्ञकेसं माधुर्यैश्वर्यादितत्त्वे रसज्ञम् ।

स्वच्छस्फीतप्रीतिलक्ष्यैकवादं देवं विद्याभूषणं तं यजामः ॥४॥

rūpopastiṁ jaiva-marmajña-kesaṁ

mādhuryaiśvaryādi-tattve rasajñam |

svaccha-sphīta-prīti-lakṣyaika-vādaṁ

devaṁ vidyābhūṣaṇaṁ taṁ yajāmaḥ ||4||

rūpa— of Rūpa Gosvāmī; upastim— follower; jaiva— pertaining to Jīva Gosvāmī; marmajña— knower of the essence; kesam— the best; mādhurya— of the mood of sweetness; aiśvarya— of the mood of opulence; ādi— and so on; tattve— in transcendental matters; rasajñam— a connoisseur of rasa; svaccha— pure; sphīta— intense; prīti— love; lakṣya— the goal of life; eka— sole; vādam— whose conclusion.

He who is Rūpa Gosvāmī’s follower, who is the best among those who know the essence of Jīva Gosvāmī’s philosophy, who is a connoisseur of rasa in transcendental matters such as mādhurya and aiśvarya, and whose sole conclusion is that the goal of life is pure, intense love for Kṛṣṇa— we worship such a divine Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa.

 

पूर्वा मीमांसोत्तरा योगसांख्यं तर्कौलूक्यं शाब्दतन्त्रं सुकाव्यम् ।

इत्यादि ज्ञानेषु पारं गतो यो देवं विद्याभूषणं तं यजामः ॥५॥

pūrvā mīmāṁsottarā yoga-sāṅkhyaṁ

tarkaulūkyaṁ śābda-tantraṁ sukāvyam |

ity ādi jñāneṣu pāraṁ gato yo

devaṁ vidyābhūṣaṇaṁ taṁ yajāmaḥ ||5||

pūrvā mīmāṁsā— the Karma-mīmāṁsā philosophy; uttarā— the Vedānta philosophy; yoga— the Yoga philosophy; sāṅkhyam— the Sāṅkhya philosophy; tarka— the Nyāya philosophy; aulūkyam— the Vaiśeṣika philosophy; śābda-tantram— the principles of word formation; sukāvyam— fine poetry; ity ādi— and so on; jñāneṣu— in these branches of knowledge; pāraṁ gataḥ— thoroughly conversant; yaḥ— he who.

                He who is thoroughly conversant with multiple branches of knowledge, such as Karma-mīmāṁsā, Vedānta, Sāṅkhya, Yoga, Nyāya, Vaiśeṣika, Sanskrit grammar, and fine poetry— we worship such a divine Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa.

 

प्राज्ञै राजन्यैश्च मत्यातिमान्यः सद्भिर्निष्ठत्वेन गाढेन कृष्णे ।

निर्वेदत्वेनैव लोकैः समं यो देवं विद्याभूषणं तं यजामः ॥६॥

prājñai rājanyaiś ca matyātimānyaḥ

sadbhir niṣṭhatvena gāḍhena kṛṣṇe |

nirvedatvenaiva lokaiḥ samaṁ yo

devaṁ vidyābhūṣaṇaṁ taṁ yajāmaḥ ||6||

prājñaiḥ— by learned scholars; rājanyaiḥ— by kings; ca— and; matyā— on account of his intellect; atimānyaḥ— highly respected; sadbhiḥ— by saintly persons; niṣṭhatvena— on account of his devotion; gāḍhena— deep; kṛṣṇe— unto Kṛṣṇa; nirvedatvena— on account of his detachment; eva— indeed; lokaiḥ— by common people; samam— equally; yaḥ— he who.

                He who is highly respected, equally by learned scholars, kings, saintly persons, and common people, on account of his intellect, deep devotion for Kṛṣṇa, and detachment from the world— we worship such a divine Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa.

 

मध्वाचार्याणां प्रमेयाणि मत्वा संवाद्यैवालीकिनां जित्वरो यः ।

आजीवं माय्यंसलारातिशिष्टं देवं विद्याभूषणं तं यजामः ॥७॥

madhvācāryāṇāṁ prameyāṇi matvā

saṁvādyaivālīkināṁ jitvaro yaḥ |

ājīvaṁ māyy-aṁsalārāti-śiṣṭaṁ

devaṁ vidyābhūṣaṇaṁ taṁ yajāmaḥ ||7||

madhvācāryāṇām— of Madhvācārya; prameyāṇi— the objects of knowledge; matvā— having adopted; saṁvādya— having debated; eva— indeed; alīkinām— over deceitful philosophers; jitvaraḥ— victorious; yaḥ— he who; ājīvam— throughout his life; māyī— of Māyāvādīs; aṁsala— powerful; ārāti— enemy; śiṣṭam— distinguished.

                He who, adopting the nine objects of knowledge taught by Madhvācārya, became victorious over all deceitful philosophers after debating with them, and who was distinguished throughout his life as a strong enemy of the Māyāvādīs— we worship such a divine Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa.

 

प्रस्थानत्रित्वे हि सिद्धः स्ववृत्त्या गौडीयो येनान्वयस्तद्विमर्शे ।

वेदान्ताचार्यं हृदा स्वासुभिर्वै देवं विद्याभूषणं तं यजामः ॥८॥

prasthāna-tritve hi siddhaḥ sva-vṛttyā

gauḍīyo yenānvayas tad-vimarśe |

vedāntācāryaṁ hṛdā svāsubhir vai

devaṁ vidyābhūṣaṇaṁ taṁ yajāmaḥ ||8||

prasthāna-tritve— on the three sources (Upaniṣads, Brahma-sūtra, and Bhagavad-gītā), hi— definitely; siddhaḥ— proved; sva-vṛttyā— by his own commentary; gauḍīyaḥ— of the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas; yena— by whom; anvayaḥ— lineage and connection; tad-vimarśe— when it was under scrutiny; vedāntācāryam— the great master of Vedānta; hṛdā— with the soul; svāsubhiḥ— with our lives; vai— certainly.

                He who, by his commentaries on the prasthāna-traya, definitely proved the authenticity of the Gauḍīya lineage when it was under scrutiny— with our life and soul, we certainly worship such a divine Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa, our Vedāntācārya.

 

एतद् विद्याभूषणस्याष्टकं यो भक्त्याधीते सर्वथा प्रीणयेत्तम् ।

तद्-ग्रन्थन्यस्तं रहस्यं गृहीत्वा वृन्दारण्ये कृष्णदास्यं स विन्देत् ॥९॥

etad vidyābhūṣaṇasyāṣṭakaṁ yo

bhaktyādhīte sarvathā prīṇayet tam |

tad-grantha-nyastaṁ rahasyaṁ gṛhītvā

vṛndāraṇye kṛṣṇa-dāsyaṁ sa vindet ||9||

etat— this; vidyābhūṣaṇasya— dedicated to Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa; aṣṭakam— eightfold verses; yaḥ— one who; bhaktyā— with faith; adhīte— reads or recites; sarvathā— fully; prīṇayet— may please; tam— him; tat— his; grantha— in the books; nyastam— laid down; rahasyam— the secret; gṛhītvā— having comprehended; vṛndāraṇye— in Vṛndāvana; kṛṣṇa-dāsyam— service to Lord Kṛṣṇa; saḥ— he; vindet— may attain.

                May those who faithfully read or recite these eight verses dedicated to Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa fully please him, comprehend the secrets laid down in his books, and thus attain service to Lord Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana.
